This discussion introduces the participant to the concept of green governance and helps him or her decide whether the concept is fundamentally different from green growth policies (instruments, strategies etc.). Topic 1 probes that question taking account also of the global and corporate dimensions of governance. In Topic 2, the participant meets environmental and social safeguards, the usual way of translating the principles of sound governance into practice. The analysis of the underlying concepts makes it possible as well as necessary (in Topic 3) to introduce the student to yet another concept, namely the human rights-based approach (HRBA or RBA) to development and environmental management. Equipped with better understanding of these fundamentals, the student is then (in Topic 4) offered an opportunity to think about the big picture of green growth with its mixture of governance (and other) preconditions and numerous policy tools and practices.
